Healing Through Needles: An Acupuncturist’s Journey from Patient to Practitioner

Background and Experience

Can you share your journey into acupuncture and what inspired you to become an acupuncturist?
My introduction to acupuncture was through seeking relief from the side effects of chemotherapy, including hot flushes, night sweats, brain fog, and peripheral neuropathy. The acupuncture sessions I received were life-changing and helped me regain control over my health and wellbeing. This experience sparked my passion for learning more about this gentle, yet highly effective form of healing.

What kind of training and certifications do you have in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine?
I completed a three-year licentiate at the City College of Acupuncture, which is a Level 6/degree-level course and the only BAAB-accredited programme in London. During this training, I studied for over 3,600 hours, including 400 hours of hands-on clinic experience. I am also registered with the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), ensuring I adhere to the highest professional standards.

What types of conditions do you most commonly treat?
I commonly treat stress, musculoskeletal issues, digestive problems, and menstrual concerns. Chinese medicine’s holistic approach allows me to address a wide range of conditions, considering the mind, body, and spirit as interconnected.

Acupuncture Practice

What can a patient expect during their first acupuncture session?
During the initial appointment, I take a thorough medical history to understand the patient’s health and constitution, which helps me create a personalised treatment plan. Fine needles are then inserted at specific acupuncture points, typically for 20-25 minutes. I recommend wearing loose clothing for easy access to the arms and legs. In addition to acupuncture, I may use other modalities such as moxibustion, cupping, electro-acupuncture, or guasha. Each session lasts about one hour, including the consultation, treatment, and post-session advice on diet and lifestyle changes that can support your health.

Can you explain how acupuncture works and its benefits?
Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body along meridians, which are linked to the organs. This process promotes the smooth flow of blood and energy (Qi), relieving stagnation and encouraging healing. Acupuncture helps restore balance in the body, regulate the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being. Many patients find the treatment very relaxing.

Are there specific conditions or symptoms that acupuncture is particularly effective for?
Acupuncture can be beneficial for a variety of conditions, particularly chronic pain, tension headaches, migraines, musculoskeletal issues, and stress. NICE guidelines recommend acupuncture for chronic pain and certain side effects of cancer treatments. The key is that acupuncture is a highly individualised treatment, and I work with each patient to tailor the approach to their specific needs.

Patient Experience

How do you tailor treatments to individual patients?
I listen carefully to each patient’s concerns, as even small details can reveal the underlying cause of their symptoms. Two people with the same condition may require different treatment plans because the root cause could vary. By understanding the full picture, I create personalised treatment strategies that address both symptoms and the root cause.

What are some common misconceptions about acupuncture that you encounter?
A common misconception is that acupuncture is only about needles and that it will hurt. In fact, acupuncture needles are extremely fine, and most patients find the treatment relaxing. Additionally, Chinese medicine includes a variety of other modalities, such as moxibustion, cupping, and lifestyle advice, which also contribute to the healing process.

How do you address patient concerns about needles and the sensation of acupuncture?
I regularly check in with my patients during treatment to ensure their comfort. If someone is particularly nervous, I may begin with calming techniques such as needling the 'shen men' point on the ear, which is excellent for calming the nervous system. I also guide patients to focus on their breathing to make the experience more relaxing.

Integrative Approach

Do you incorporate other therapies or modalities in your practice, and how do they complement acupuncture?
As a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I offer a range of complementary therapies, including moxibustion, cupping, guasha, and electro-acupuncture. Each of these modalities plays a unique role in supporting the body’s healing process, whether it’s moving stagnation or tonifying organs to restore optimal function.

If I believe a patient requires additional care outside of acupuncture, I refer them to their GP or another healthcare professional. I stay up-to-date with guidelines from the British Acupuncture Council, which helps me recognise when a situation requires referral to ensure the patient receives the best care possible.

Patient Education and Advice

What advice do you have for patients considering acupuncture for the first time?
If you’re considering acupuncture, I encourage you to give it a try. Many patients find it life-changing. If you have any questions or concerns, I am always happy to discuss the process with you and ensure you feel comfortable before your treatment.

How can patients prepare for an acupuncture session to maximise its effectiveness?
It’s helpful to avoid coming on an empty stomach and to wear loose clothing so I can easily access your arms and legs. No need to worry about shaving or waxing; your comfort is the priority. Acupuncture is a straightforward treatment, and no special preparation is necessary.

Future of Acupuncture

How do you see the role of acupuncture evolving in modern healthcare?
Acupuncture has already begun to gain more recognition within mainstream healthcare, especially for conditions like chronic pain, headaches, and stress-related issues. I would love to see it more widely available, especially on the NHS, as an alternative to medication, offering a natural way to support health and well-being.

Are there any emerging trends in acupuncture that you're particularly excited about?
While acupuncture is a time-tested practice, I am excited about how it continues to be integrated into modern wellness and healthcare. It’s fascinating to see how more people are discovering its benefits for a wide range of conditions.

Personal Insights

What do you find most rewarding about being an acupuncturist?
The most rewarding aspect of being an acupuncturist is seeing patients leave the treatment room feeling significantly better than when they arrived. Helping people live pain- and stress-free lives brings me immense joy.

Can you share a memorable success story from your practice?
A memorable success story involves treating my father for a leg issue. After just a few treatments, he noticed his long-standing sinus issues improved as well. This highlights the interconnectedness of the body and how treating one area can benefit other parts of the system.

Closing Thoughts

What message would you like to convey to potential patients who are hesitant about trying acupuncture?Acupuncture truly changed my life, and I believe it can help you too. If you’re struggling with pain or discomfort, I encourage you to give acupuncture a try and see how it can improve your health and well-being.
